8-Year-Olds
Activities for 8-year-olds.
Eight can read the instructions, gather the materials and get on with it, which changes what an activity needs to be — a starting point rather than a set of steps.
The best ones here have a constraint instead of a method: build the tallest tower from one sheet of newspaper, make a game using only what is on this table, get the marble to take ten seconds. Then leave them alone.
Expect the rules to be rewritten and the activity to become something else. That is the age working as intended.
Activities
-
A Post Box for Kind Notes
A cereal box with a slot cut in it. Everyone posts a note about somebody else, and you read them out at dinner.
-
Make Up a Story With Three Things
A character, a place, and something going wrong. That is enough for almost any child to be away.
-
Five Games for the Wait Before the Food
No bag, no crayons, nothing to drop on the floor. Five games that need only the two of you and a table.
-
A Thankful Tree
A branch in a jar and a paper leaf each day. Small, slow, and it ends up being the thing everyone reads at the table.
-
Winter Play When It Is Too Cold to Go Out
Ice, torches, dens and paper snowflakes. The four things that reliably fill a dark afternoon.
-
Noisy Shakers and a Jar of Good Things
One loud activity and one quiet one. Make shakers for the countdown, and a jar to look back at next year.
