Quiet Time

Quiet Time ideas for children aged 2 to 8.

Quiet time is the gap between needing a rest and being willing to have one. These activities are designed to be done sitting down, mostly alone, without much talking — puzzles, sorting, sticker books, looking at picture books, threading, colouring.

They work best somewhere slightly out of the way with the lights lower than usual, and they work far better if the same few things appear in the same place each day. Novelty wakes a child up; familiarity settles them.

None of these are guaranteed to produce a calm child. What they reliably do is give a tired one something to do that is not a screen, which on most days is the actual goal.
