2-Year-Olds
Activities for 2-year-olds.
Two is the age of doing the same thing again. Filling and tipping out, posting things through holes, squashing, banging, carrying objects from one room to another with great seriousness. There is usually no product at the end and that is fine.
Five focused minutes is a real success. Anything that lasts longer is a bonus, and an activity being abandoned after two minutes is not a failure of the activity.
Almost everything goes in the mouth at this age, so small parts, dry rice and anything bead-sized need an adult sitting right there — the safety notes on each activity say which.
Activities
-
Handprint Reindeer Cards
A hand, upside down, is a reindeer. Nobody sees it until you show them.
-
Monster Feet Painting
Paint the bottom of their feet and walk them down a roll of paper. Messy, hilarious, and over in ten minutes.
-
Real Kitchen Jobs a Small Child Can Actually Do
Washing, tearing, stirring and sprinkling. Eight jobs that are genuinely useful on a busy cooking day.
-
Print Hearts With a Cardboard Tube
Squash a kitchen roll tube into a heart shape and use it as a stamp. One tube makes forty hearts.
-
Five Ways to Decorate an Egg With No Dye
Stickers, felt tips, wool, tissue paper and tape. All five work on a hard-boiled egg and none of them stain anything.
-
Setting Up a Room So Play Happens Without You
The highest-leverage thing on this whole site. Fewer things out, at their height, in containers they can open.
-
Goodnight, Everything
A slow bedtime story that says goodnight to one thing after another, and gets quieter as it goes.
-
Big Dog, Little Dog
For the youngest listeners. Very short, very repetitive, and about dogs, which helps.
-
A Pouring Station
Two small jugs, a tray, and water. Absorbing, genuinely useful, and a child can do it entirely alone.
-
Getting the Energy Out in a Small Room
Four ways to wear a child out indoors without breaking anything or annoying the neighbours downstairs.
-
Counting the Stairs (and Everything Else)
Not really an activity — a habit. Counting things out loud all day does more for early maths than any worksheet.
-
An Egg Hunt That Works for Every Age
The same hunt, three difficulty levels, so a two-year-old and a seven-year-old can play together without either being bored.
-
Cloud Dough You Can Make in Two Minutes
Flour and oil, mixed in a bowl. It holds its shape when you squeeze it and collapses into powder when you poke it, which is the whole appeal.
-
Painting With Water
A bucket of water and a big brush. They paint the wall, the fence and the path, it dries, and they do it again. No mess at all.
-
Mixing Colours Without the Mess
Two blobs of paint sealed in a freezer bag. They squash it, the colour changes, and nothing gets on anything.
